Application of the Kohlberg Cognative Stage Theory for Moral Reasoning at the US Naval Academy

by - Lt. Stephen Hoffman

This paper describes the Kohlberg Cognitive Stage Theory as it has been used at the Company Officer level at the United States Naval Academy (USNA). The theory is useful in assessing moral goals and moral progress through the four years of a midshipman's (cadet's) character education by identifying the progress in levels of moral reasoning. Recent research explores the levels and stages of moral growth as well as the typical behaviors associated with each moral level and year of residency at USNA.
