Professional Excellence: The South Korean Case

by - Gen Lee, Pil Sup ROKA ret Korea Past-Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff

In this paper the author, who is the ex-chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of South Korea, discusses professional excellence as he experienced it in his 37 years of military service. He provides a summary of Christianity in the South Korean military, his personal experiences as a regiment commander, superintendent of the Korean Military Academy, Commander of the Second ROK Army, etc. The author compares Suntzu's Art of War with Christ's commands for leadership.

The effects of a program of applying Christian principles and the increased professional excellence that may have resulted are presented in terms of reduced AWOL, suicide, and accident rates. A new program (Vision 2020) is described which expands Christian influence from the military into a coordinated nation-wide change of values by the Christian baptism of approximately 200,000 soldiers each year.
